QUESTIONS
WE'RE FREQUENTLY ASKED |
|
How
do I know if my rug needs cleaning?
There
are four ways to check for dirt in your rug. First, lift the corner
of the rug and slap the back of it with your hand. If dirt comes out,
it needs cleaning. Second, dampen a white towel and wipe it across the
surface of the rug. If the towel gets soiled, the rug needs cleaning.
Next, pull the pile fibers apart and examine the foundation. If there
is dirt in the warp and weft threads, the rug needs cleaning. Lastly,
you see the family pets, Zippy or Ming, christen the rug. It needs cleaning
because that was probably not the first time; they just hadn’t got caught
yet!

How
often should I get my rug or carpet cleaned?
It
really depends on the number of people in your household, pets, lifestyle
and location. However 1-3 years is generally satisfactory.

What happens
if I spill something on my rug or carpet?
A
spot or a spill must receive immediate attention to prevent staining.
The first step is to blot up as much of the spill as possible. Do not
use household carpet cleaners. You can use club soda or diluted baby
shampoo to help remove a spot. If the spot remains, call us. I also
sell several of the cleaning products that we use and trust.

Do
I really need a pad under my rug?
Yes,
rug pads are very important. Rug padding is intended to hold your rug
securely in place whether on hard or soft surfaces. This prevents the
rug from shifting position or slipping, which could be dangerous. Over
time, shifting can cause stress and break the stitching on the rugs’
backing, Also, it can cause excessive wear and rug stretching. The good
news is that the rug pads actually increase the life of your rug and
make them safer and more comfortable for family or friends. Not every
pad is for every rug. We will sell you the right pad for the type of
rug that you have. I always tell people that a rug without a pad is
like wearing shoes without stockings. A good pad pays for itself immediately.
It is one of the best investments you can make for your rug’s protection
and longevity. Consider it inexpensive insurance.

of doing business and is also for your protection.

What
can I do at home to prolong the life of my rugs and carpets?
- Vaccum
them frequently (the more the better) Dirt that is left in your
rug or carpet is abrasive and will act like sandpaper wearing
down the fibers.
- To
insure even wear, rotate your rug at least once a year. Depending
on the traffic, the timing of the rotation should vary from 6
months to 2 years.
- Move
furniture slightly every 6 months or so to prevent ugly indentations
that can end up being permanent.
- If you have
a plant on your rug or carpet, always keep a dish under the plant
to prevent moisture from permanently staining and causing mildew
which can lead to dry rot. Dry rot will damage the foundation
of the rug. Be careful, because this happens more frequently than
you may think.
- Make
sure you have a pad under your rug and that it is the right type
of pad for the rug and for the area it is laying in.
- Clean
up spills quickly before they can permanently damage your rug.
- If you need
to store your rug for an extended period of time, use kraft paper
to roll it in. (make sure the rug is completely free of moisture)
Then wrap the rug in rolled tyvek. Regular plastic will not let
the rug breathe and could do irreversible damage. Don’t leave
the rug in a basement or high moisture areas because mildew will
occur and dry rot will destroy the foundation. A great place is
your dry attic.
- Moths
and beetles can do extensive damage to your rug. They can eat
the pile as well as the foundation. Check the back of your rug
regularly for signs of damage.
- Try to keep
Zippy and Ming out of the rug and carpeted areas, because as good
as they are, we all know that accidents will and can happen.
- Call
us with any other questions that I may have left out. We are at
your service.
